Hurriyet leaders placed under house arrest

Restrictions in Srinagar to prevent Eidgah march

Srinagar, May 21 : In occupied Kashmir, the authorities have placed the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders under house arrest to prevent them from leading a rally at Mazar-e-Shuhada in Eidgah area of Srinagar, today.

The APHC had announced to hold the rally to commemorate the martyrdom anniversaries of prominent liberation leaders, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone. It had also planned to lay foundation stone of the ‘Martyrs’ Wall’ at the Mazar-e-Shuhada.

Besides the APHC Chairman, those who put under house arrest included Maulana Abbas Ansari, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Bilal Ghani Lone, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Zafar Akbar Butt, Masroor Abbas and Yasmeen Raja. Indian police also arrested APHC leader Mohammad Yousuf Naqash from his residence and shifted him to Safa Kadal police station in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the occupation authorities have imposed strict restrictions in most parts of the Srinagar city to prevent people from taking out the rally. They have also sealed all roads leading to the Eidgah.

It was on 21st May in 1990 when unidentified gunmen killed Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq at his residence in Srinagar. More than 60 mourners were later martyred in Hawal area of the city when Indian troops fired upon his funeral procession.

On the same day, in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, was assassinated by unknown assailants when he was returning from Eidgah after addressing a public gathering.

Shutdown to be observed in IHK tomorrow

Srinagar, May 20 : In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown will be observed, tomorrow, to mark the martyrdom anniversaries of prominent liberation leaders, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone.

Call for the shutdown has been given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. He has also given Eidgah Chalo call to pay tributes to the martyrs.

Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq was martyred by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Srinagar on 21st May 2190. 70 mourners were killed in Hawal area of the city when Indian troops fired upon the funeral procession of the martyred. On the same day, in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, was shot dead by unknown assailants when he was returning from Eidgah after addressing a public gathering.

  On the other hand, the occupation authorities placed the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, under house arrest in Srinagar, today, preventing him from presiding over a seminar at the Hurriyet headquarters in connection with the Martyrdom Week.Senier APHC leader Bilal Gani Lone was also placed under house arrest at his residence in Srinagar.
Addressing the seminar, the speakers maintained that the Kashmiri martyrs had laid down their lives for securing Kashmiris’ inalienable right to self-determination and their sacrifices would not be allowed to go waste.

Senior APHC leader, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, speaking at a separate meeting in Srinagar said that the Kashmir liberation movement was indigenous and no body would be allowed to sabotage it.

Liberation leader, Javed Ahmed Mir, in a statement issued in Srinagar eulogised the services of Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone for the Kashmir cause.

On the other hand, an Indian police constable committed suicide by hanging himself at a training camp in Manigam area of Ganderbal district. This raised the number of such deaths amongst Indian police personnel and troops to 243 since January 2007.
