Srinagar, January 21 : In occupied Kashmir, Hurriyet leaders have paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of Gaw Kadal on their anniversary.

Over 50 innocent civilians including children were killed on this day in 1990 when Indian troops had resorted to indiscriminate firing on a peaceful procession at Gaw Kadal in Srinagar.

APHC leader and the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples League, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, addressing a party meeting in Islamabad town said that the Gaw Kadal massacre was intentional and Indian troops deliberately killed people and put afire the residential houses and shops. He said that from 1947 to till date Indian armed forces had committed serial massacres in the occupied territory, killing thousands of innocent people. Waza said that India had no right to celebrate its Republic Day in occupied Kashmir as it continued to deny the Kashmiris their right to self-determination. He urged the international human rights organizations to set up an international independent tribunal to probe the massacres in occupied Kashmir to unmask and punish the perpetrators.

Another APHC leader and the Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement, Zafar Akbar Butt, addressing his party meeting in Srinagar said that the Kashmiri martyrs’ unparallel sacrifices, which had centre-staged the Kashmir dispute at the global level, would not be allowed to go waste. He castigated India for celebrating its Republic Day in Kashmir, which was a UN-mandated disputed territory. He said that on one side, New Delhi was claiming zero tolerance against human rights abuses, but on the other, its troops were continuously commenting grave rights abuses in the territory. He called upon the world community to impress upon New Delhi to give the Kashmiri people their right to self-determination.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front-R Chairman, Farooq Ahmad Dar, addressing a condolence meeting at the party office in Srinagar said that the martyrs of Gaw Kadal would always be remembered as beacon of light for the coming generations of Kashmir.
